Hello all, hope everyone is well!
Well, my life changed just a little bit yesterday. One of those things that someone will never forget. I am sure you can close your eyes and come up with a few without even thinking. Most of the time its something that you wouldn't have thought you would remember. Other times it is. Like Joe Sakic breaking in on the right wing and scoring that goal in the 2002 men's gold medal game. Or riding down the street in my 1983 Motne Carlo with the boy's in the back laughing hysterically at absolutely nothing.
I walked into Second City training studios, almost by accident. I was making my way to the Jays game (more on that shitty performance later). I knew the building was in the area, but I looked to my right, and boom. There it was. Second City. I walk down the stairs, and into the studios. Now, it is not the original location, but they have a lot of the original stuff. The halls are covered in old classic pictures of Candy, Myers and Levi. I walked into the main office area, and saw a door that read Registration and I gave a little knock. The man at the desk says to please come in and pull up a chair. Now it was like 6:30, so I was surprised he was still working. By the number of voices and sounds there was at least one class going on. Kevin, his name was, asks what made me stop by. I tell him about myself, and my dreams. He listened very intensely and even though I know he must here this stuff from every new student that walks in, I honestly felt like he cared. After I finish my story he says Brad... I want to show you something. Follow me. He stands and walks out of his office. I follow behind. Each picture we pass he points at and tells the story behind it. We pass a class room with people running around and laughing. We enter a room, with no lights on. He turns them on, and the room is empty except for about eight to ten plastic chairs and an old looking, fifteen foot stage with curtains cutting across the center. He smiles, walks up onto the stage. His smile grows bigger. I smile, not knowing what is really going on. He says come up here on stage Brad. I walk. I step. There I am, standing on this old wooden piece of crap that really has no business being used as a stage anymore. Brad, he says, you are standing on the original stage of Second City. You are standing on the stage that John Candy first stood on for his first show.
It was peaceful and calming. It was right.
We went back to his office, talked a little more. He gave me a bunch of information on how the school works, and of all the upcoming classes. But that was it. He didn't ask me to register for any upcoming class, or get any personal information from me at all. He just said, when you are ready, come back and see me. I will here. Second City will be here.
BOOM.
Exactly what I needed to here. My past experiences in Vancouver were almost the exact opposite of that. SIGN UP NOW! COME WITH ME! ILL MAKE YOU A STAR!
Fuck you.
I do now, what I want to do. It is in my hands. I do what feels right.
And I know what I'm going to do....
